I worked as a teacher and administrator at independent schools in Virginia for 30 years, most recently as Head of School at James River Day School in Lynchburg, a K-8 co-ed day school, where I served 2007-2017. I worked 1992-2007 at St. Anne’s-Belfield in Charlottesville as a 5th grade teacher and Middle School Director, and 1987-1992 at the Blue Ridge School for Boys as an English teacher and Department Chair. I have been a teacher since I was 11, when I taught my 4-year-old sister how to read, down in “Miss Shoe’s Kindergarten” in the basement. I am a voracious reader and a very slow distance runner and hiker. I believe the best schools make decisions based on what is best for the children. You can reach me at Twitter at @mwriser.
